Frequently asked acne questions

Q: Should I wash my pillow case every night?

You don’t have to! If you are washing your pillows in pore clogging free detergent ( refer to pore clogging list) and not using fabric softener, dryer sheets, or using hair care products with pore clogging ingredients then you don’t have to worry. In my experience most people get caught in hair care. When you are using products with pore cloggers in them, even if they don’t touch your face, they transfer from your hair to your pillow case at night and then inevitably to your face.

Q: Is my diet breaking me out?

Diet is likely aiding to your acne, but it’s probably not the foods you think. Sugar, coffee, fast food… these actually don’t make too much of a difference. The foods that I focus on are androgenic foods like peanuts and dairy, and foods containing iodine like sushi and seafood. We go into depth with your diet during the consultation to see exactly where food triggers are for you.

Q: Do I need to quit wearing makeup?

Nope!! You will hear this a lot from me, but as long as anything going on your skin is free of pore cloggers then you are good to go. Remember this includes foundation, powder, countour, blush, highlight, and anything else you put on your skin. I usually recommend Bare Minerals original loose foundation as this one is clean and light on your skin. (sometimes pore clogging free foundations that are heavy full coverage can irritate skin).

Q: Do people with acne have poor hygiene?

No! Often times people with acne are so aware of their acne that they are more hygienic than most people. Acne is hereditary and has to be triggered, usually a person’s trigger with be in their diet, hormones, gut health, stress, and external factors like pore clogging ingredients.

Q: Will going on birth control help my acne?

In most cases going on a birth control will actually make acne worse. Especially any implant type device as these always raise testosterone. When picking a birth control it’s important not to pick one that is a “lo dose” birth control as your body will increase your testosterone levels. Please refer to my birth control blog post for a list of acne safe brands.

Q: Can I control hormonal acne?

First of all there’s no such thing as hormonal acne, only acne that is being triggered by imbalanced hormones. The good news is that hormones are really easy to get into balance with the right supplements and birth control knowledge!

Q: What are the dark spots leftover when a pimple has healed?

I often times hear clients refer to these spots as scars. The goods news is that they aren’t scars and really easy to get rid of. The dark or sometimes red marks are called Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation and are easy treatable with home care products, and/or chemical peels. Even left untreated they usually fade in time by themselves.

Q: Can I treat acne with super sensitive skin?

Absolutely! If you are seeing a knowledgeable esthetician they will know how to introduce products slowly to your skin so it doesn’t become overwhelmed.
